What Is Peripheral Neuropathy?

The most common form of peripheral neuropathy affects the feet. When there is a problem affecting the nerves in the feet, one can experience tingling and numbness in the feet, shooting, stabbing, or burning pain there, loss of coordination and balance, and muscle weakness. There is typically an underlying condition for those with this disorder. Those with diabetes and the elderly are most apt to be affected by this condition. Loss of sensation and possible injury to the feet without knowing it is a dangerous combination. It is vital that one who suffers from this type of neuropathy takes proper and daily care of one’s feet. Such care includes keeping feet clean, looking for ingrown toenails, sores or signs of injury, moisturizing feet, and wearing proper fitting shoes. While symptoms can be intermittent, because of the danger involved and the progressive nature of the condition, it is suggested that one consult a podiatrist as early as possible for relief of symptoms and treatment recommendations.

Neuropathy

Neuropathy can be a potentially serious condition, especially if it is left undiagnosed. If you have any concerns that you may be experiencing nerve loss in your feet, consult with Loren Hansen, DPM from Ankle & Foot Medical Center. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment for neuropathy.

What Is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a condition that leads to damage to the nerves in the body. Peripheral neuropathy, or neuropathy that affects your peripheral nervous system, usually occurs in the feet. Neuropathy can be triggered by a number of different causes. Such causes include diabetes, infections, cancers, disorders, and toxic substances.

Symptoms of Neuropathy Include:

  • Numbness
  • Sensation loss
  • Prickling and tingling sensations
  • Throbbing, freezing, burning pains
  • Muscle weakness

Those with diabetes are at serious risk due to being unable to feel an ulcer on their feet. Diabetics usually also suffer from poor blood circulation. This can lead to the wound not healing, infections occurring, and the limb may have to be amputated.

Treatment

To treat neuropathy in the foot, podiatrists will first diagnose the cause of the neuropathy. Figuring out the underlying cause of the neuropathy will allow the podiatrist to prescribe the best treatment, whether it be caused by diabetes, toxic substance exposure, infection, etc. If the nerve has not died, then it’s possible that sensation may be able to return to the foot.

Pain medication may be issued for pain. Electrical nerve stimulation can be used to stimulate nerves. If the neuropathy is caused from pressure on the nerves, then surgery may be necessary.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis that impacts one joint at a time, usually the big toe joint, lesser toe joints, the ankle, and/or the knee. This type of arthritis is caused by a condition called hyperuricemia, where too much uric acid in the body leads to the build-up of uric acid crystals in joints, fluids, and tissues in the body. Hyperuricemia is more apt to develop in males, those who are obese, those with health conditions – such as congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, or diabetes – and those taking certain medications, like diuretics. Gout does not always develop from hyperuricemia, but if it does, it can flare up and be intensely painful (with swelling and redness). An episode of gout can have a sudden onset and last from days to weeks. Though there is no cure for gout, it can be treated and managed with proper care. If gout is suspected in the toes, a podiatrist can perform tests to confirm the diagnosis, treat it (often with medication) and help manage future bouts of the condition.

Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If you are seeking treatment, contact Loren Hansen, DPM from Ankle & Foot Medical Center. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

Peroneal Tendonitis

Peroneal tendonitis occurs when the tendons connecting the foot to the lower leg are inflamed. While it generally occurs from overuse of the tendons, this condition can be a result of a sudden injury, like a broken ankle. People who engage in sports involving a lot of ankle movement are more likely to suffer from this affliction, but it can also affect those who do not stretch properly before activity, have pre-existing conditions like arthritis, have high arches, are overweight, and who smoke. Symptoms of peroneal tendonitis include pain along the tendon that worsens with physical activity, swelling, redness, and a nodule that moves with the tendon. Usually a combination of physical therapy, medication, and rest are employed to treat this type of tendon issue.  However, it is suggested that this or any foot pain be diagnosed and treated by a qualified podiatrist so that symptoms do not worsen.

Sports related foot and ankle injuries require proper treatment before players can go back to their regular routines. For more information, contact Loren Hansen, DPM of Ankle & Foot Medical Center. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Sports Related Foot and Ankle Injuries

Foot and ankle injuries are a common occurrence when it comes to athletes of any sport. While many athletes dismiss the initial aches and pains, the truth is that ignoring potential foot and ankle injuries can lead to serious problems. As athletes continue to place pressure and strain the area further, a mild injury can turn into something as serious as a rupture and may lead to a permanent disability. There are many factors that contribute to sports related foot and ankle injuries, which include failure to warm up properly, not providing support or wearing bad footwear. Common injuries and conditions athletes face, including:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Plantar Fasciosis
  • Achilles Tendinitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains

Sports related injuries are commonly treated using the RICE method. This includes rest, applying ice to the injured area, compression and elevating the ankle. More serious sprains and injuries may require surgery, which could include arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery. Rehabilitation and therapy may also be required in order to get any recovering athlete to become fully functional again. Any unusual aches and pains an athlete sustains must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

Heel Pain Can Be Treated!

Do you suffer from heel pain when you get up in the morning? If so, you should seek the professional help of your podiatrist and have a proper diagnosis performed. Heel pain can be caused by several different foot-related conditions.

Onychomycosis, or tinea unguium, is a type of fungal infection that can affect fingernails and, more commonly, toenails. If you have a fungal toenail infection your nail may become thickened, brittle, ragged, crumbly, or discolored. Toenails are made up of layers of fibrous keratin, which the fungus can get in between. The fungus can even grow underneath the nail or in the matrix of the nail (where it grows), causing the nail to separate from the toe. Each of these scenarios can make treating toenail fungus challenging when using oral or topical antifungal medicines. Laser therapy treatment to eradicate toenail fungus has become a popular and effective treatment because it can painlessly and accurately target the fungus within the layers, underneath, or in the matrix of the toenail without affecting healthy structures surrounding it. If you have toenail fungus, contact a podiatrist to see if laser treatment is right for you.

Laser treatment can be an effective way to get rid of toenail fungus. If you have any questions about laser treatment, consult with Loren Hansen, DPM from Ankle & Foot Medical Center. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality treatment for fungal nails.

What Are Toenail Fungal Infections?

Onychomycosis, or fungal infection of the nail, is a relatively common and non-serious condition. Around 10 percent of U.S. citizens are afflicted with fungal nails. Common forms of fungus that infect the nail include dermatophytes, yeasts, and molds.

Symptoms of Toenail Fungal Infections Include:

  • Nail thickening
  • Brittleness of the nail
  • Discoloration of the nail

Diagnosis for Fungal Nails

Fungal infections are diagnosed by fungal culture and microscopy. This will rule out any other conditions such as nail trauma, psoriasis, lichen planus, and onychogryphosis.

What Is Laser Treatment?

Laser treatment is a non-invasive, safe, quick, and painless procedure that uses the heat from a laser to kill fungus in the nail. Each infected nail is targeted with a laser for several minutes. The treatment is usually utilized several different times over a select period. During this time, a podiatrist will keep an eye on the infection.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office located in Las Vegas, NV . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.

What Is a Plantar Fascia Rupture?

A band of tissue that connects your heel to your toes, called the plantar fascia, often becomes inflamed and is one of the most common causes of heel pain. Sometimes this tissue can also rupture, which may feel like a tearing pain in the arch of the foot. It is usually the result of a sports-related injury, especially while jumping and landing, or making sudden stops and starts. Although a plantar fascia rupture is relatively uncommon, it is far more prevalent in people with chronic plantar fasciitis and flat feet, as well as those involved in football, basketball, dancing, tennis and soccer. Swelling, tenderness, and bruising are common symptoms of this type of injury. Weight-bearing on the affected foot is extremely painful and not recommended. A podiatrist can examine your foot to determine the severity of the injury, usually with an imaging test. Pain medication, icing the area, and wearing a protective boot to stabilize the foot are among the ways to treat such a rupture. It’s a good idea to make an appointment with your podiatrist as soon as possible for an appropriate diagnosis and treatment plan.
